Summary/Abstract: John the Baptist is a historical and prophetic figure between the Old and New Testaments, a precursor of the Messiah. A desert ascetic, he announces the decisive turning point in history and God's imminent judgment, calling for conversion and repentance. He preaches concrete adherence to God's will, observance of Mosaic law, and social justice. He administers baptism in the Jordan as a sign of forgiveness of sins and preparation for the Kingdom of God. He bears witness to the centrality of Jesus and announces his coming as the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit. He dies a martyr at the hands of Herod Antipas, confirming his mission with his life and blood.
