Summary/Abstract: This article examines the significant role played by the painter Nicolae Grigorescu in the Romanian War of Independence (1877–1878), emphasising his dual contribution as both artist and front-line reporter. During the conflict, the Romanian army was accompanied by numerous correspondents and visual artists—Romanian and foreign alike—whose works were published in the illustrated press of the period. At the initiative of General Carol Davila and with governmental support, a group of four Romanian painters, including Grigorescu, was sent to the front in order to document the course of the war visually.Nicolae Grigorescu distinguished himself through his direct involvement alongside combat troops, producing an impressive number of sketches that depict soldiers’ daily lives, military camps, battle scenes and the physiognomies of Romanian soldiers. Characterised by realism, sensitivity and accuracy, his works offer an authentic image of the conflict and foreground the heroism of the ordinary soldier.Based on sketches made on the battlefield, the painting The Attack at Smârdan synthesises Grigorescu’s artistic vision and stands as a tribute to the Romanian army. Through his war-time creations, the artist made a decisive contribution to the construction of the visual memory of the War of Independence, successfully combining artistic expression with historical documentation.
