Summary/Abstract: Foreign travelers passing through Wallachia make many references to the way Romanian rural society looked in the 19th century. They provide, through their travel diaries, information of great historical and ethnological value regarding the customs, traditions, superstitions or traditional costume of Romanians in the 19th century. Their notes must be viewed with great attention and "sifted" by the researcher's experience because, not infrequently, these mentions are made by people at different levels of education. In this paper, we will present the references of the Venetian prelate Francesco Nardi (1808-1877), Aurélie de Soubiran Ghica (1820-1904) who settled in Bucharest towards the end of the 19th century, the Russian doctor Stepan Fiodorovici Dobronrov, the Viennese doctor Siegfried Kapper (1821-1879) on his journey through the Romanian Banat in 1853, or the German orientalist Julius Heinrich Petermann, in 1852, during his passage through Wallachia, who left particularly important information about the Romanians and their customs.
