Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to analyze the beginning of bilateral relations between Romania and Ethiopia during the period 1957-1964. The first part will present the first contacts between the two countries in the Interwar Period, the most important being Mihai Tican-Rumano's trip to Ethiopia and Nicolae Titulescu's positioning on the side of the African state at the League of Nations in 1936, during the attack by fascist Italy. After the end of the war, relations between the two countries were formalized in 1957. The second part of the paper will analyze how the Romanian state tried to establish economic relations with Ethiopia, but without success. In 1960 and 1962, two Romanian trade delegations visited the African state, but they failed to achieve their objectives, failing to conclude only a few contracts through which the Romanian state delivered various textile products to Ethiopia. Starting with 1962, the two countries also began to collaborate on a cultural level, when the first three young Ethiopians arrived in Romania to study. The most important event in the relations between the two countries during the period under study was the visit to Romania of Emperor Haile Selassie I. This was very well organized by the Romanian communists, the monarch being allowed to visit the Romanian Patriarchate, where he had a meeting with Patriarch Justinian, since Ethiopia was also an Oriental Orthodox country.
