Summary/Abstract: From the outset, it is important to note that this study does not constitute an exhaustive examination of the sociology of social problems, but rather aims to be a focused and introductory sociological analysis of a particularly relevant concept that has been debated and explored over the years within the academic field of sociology and beyond. Therefore, using a sociological approach and drawing on a series of conceptual, theoretical, and terminological frameworks found in the specialized literature, the introductory section of this study will begin by presenting historical landmarks regarding the emergence and development over time of a fundamental branch of sociology known as “the sociology of social problems.” Also in the introduction, we will focus on examining the theoretical and practical similarities and differences between the sociology of social problems and another fundamental sociological subfield known as the sociology of deviance. Moving forward, we will proceed to define, classify, and categorize social problems. As we approach the conclusion of this study, we will focus on how social problems are perceived and represented at the societal level. Finally, in the conclusion, we will highlight the crucial role of the sociology of social problems in both academic and social contexts.
