Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to responses to the outbreak of war recorded in diaries kept by writers. The first group of authors includes those (Maria Dąbrowska, Zofia Nałkowska, Karol Irzykowski, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz) who recorded their reactions to the attack on Poland by the German army on September 1, 1939. The second group (Alexander Werth, Andrzej Bobkowski, Maria Kuncewiczowa) consists of authors who at the moment of the German attack on Belgium and France on 10 May 1940 stayed in Paris. All of the discussed diaries were written in large cities and capitals of countries (Warsaw, Paris), which affected the content of the records and the stylistic shape the authors gave them. Confinement in a large urban agglomeration also had an impact on the cognitive situation reflected in the texts in question. The diarists' attitudes towards the change in their existential situation were interpreted mainly from the axiological perspective. Indeed, the war turned out to be a moment exceptionally conducive to revealing the world of values to which the authors of the discussed diaries testified.
