Summary/Abstract: The ideal of the Christian life is the knowledge of God, which also implies self‑knowledge—a knowledge attained through the human person’s participation in God, as the Christian advances through virtue toward the supreme goal of existence: deification. Being created according to the image of God (not according to “image and likeness,” as many mistakenly say), the human being can, through effort and grace, attain “likeness,” which is equivalent to deification.
