Summary/Abstract: My aim is to demonstrate, through the peculiar example of the documentary-producer John Grierson, how he as a mass media expert relates to the idea of public service. I am doing so by focusing on a very specific phase of Grierson’s career (the late 1940s and the early 1950s), when he tried to gain new areas and institutional frameworks beyond filmmaking, which had been his primary operational terrain. Since Grierson was an active trade writer in film industry, besides his producing positions, I am to realize my objective through close reading of his articles published in different types of trade outlets during the aforementioned period. My analysis focuses on the formation of the topic of public service and also on the characteristics of persuasive communication targeted at professional audiences.
