Summary/Abstract: The social discourse and the various forms of popular culture, such as movies produced and distributed by the major streaming services, reflect the technological determination and the representation of the media consumer vulnerable to digitalization. Nick Bilton’s fi lm Fake Famous, released in 2021, carries this narrative. The film aims to deconstruct and unveil the divisive phenomenon of social media influencers. This paper offers a more in-depth critical analysis combining medianarratological and discourse analysis aspects and argues that the film addresses the issue with a less nuanced critical approach. In contrast, it presents a one-plane and distorted picture of the influencer culture and Generation Z’s cohort attitudes towards work.
