Summary/Abstract: The reforms of Emperor Constantine led to a period of peace for the Christian Church within the Roman Empire. Martyrdom, which Christians had regarded as the supreme form of identification with Christ, no longer constituted the ultimate attainable goal. Devout individuals sought new means of expressing their Christian devotion. Owing to a convergence of factors, a form of pilgrimage emerged that could meet this need. The general scholarly view is that the gaze of the fourth‑century pilgrim was directed toward the “biblical past” and toward its foundational places.
