Alexandru Tzigara Samurcaş (later years). The Return of Moral Guilt during the Communist Period and Claims about his Royal Lineage

Summary/Abstract: This paper is dealing with the latter years of Alexandru Tzigara Samurcaş’ life, the well known Romanian art historian, ethnographer and museologist. His pro-German affinities during the First World War (in the occupied territory of Romania) irritated the national public opinion during the war as well as in the interwar decades. Prominent intellectuals blamed him of collaborationism, particualrly historian Nicolae Iorga. The conflict with the latter had a significant negative impact on Tzigara Samurcaş’s academic career. Nonetheless, he became the founder and director of the Museum of Ethnographic and National Art of Romania. Based on various archival sources (and not only), the paper sheds new light on several aspects of his biography. This article focuses on the first years of the communist regime, a tumultous time that had devastating effects on Alexandru Tzigara Samurcaş’s final years.
