Summary/Abstract: This text was written by Mitchell Cohen as an introduction for his book The Wager of Lucien Goldmann: Tragedy, Dialectics and a Hidden God, in 2024, when it was translated into Catalan. It explores Lucien Goldmann’s life from the 1930s antisemitic Romania to his emergence as an established scholar of Marxist philosophy and sociology in postwar France. Though the author was reluctant to use Goldmann’s biography as a pathway to interrogating his reframing of Marx’s concepts, the genesis of the book stands as proof of the importance of personal trajectories hold for professional innovation. By interviewing the people closest to Goldmann, and then expanding his research to those who knew him 60 years prior, Cohen convincingly analyzes not only his protagonist and his stand on Marxist philosophy, but also the fate of an entire Hebrew generation during the age of extremes.
