Summary/Abstract: Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre was born on 12 January 1929, the son of Eneas MacIntyre and his wife Margaret (née Chalmers), both Scottish physicians of Irish origin. He grew up in London and was educated at Epsom College, Surrey, carrying with him—proudly—the Gaelic, Irish, and Scottish oral tradition. He studied at Queen Mary College and at the University of London (1945–49). During this period, he was deeply impressed by the poverty in the East End, which drew him closer to Marxism, as well as to moral philosophy more generally, eventually becoming perhaps the most important philosopher of ethics and morality at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty‑first.
