Summary/Abstract: The inventory of current critical sources confirms that the fantastic is an operative aesthetic category, one that can be approached from multiple perspectives. The difficulties of analysis are linked to the fact that “the genre defies norms, contributing to the renewal of literature by repudiating the rigid rules of traditional prose” (Gheorghe Glodeanu, Istoria prozei fantastice românești, Cluj‑Napoca, Școala Ardeleană Publishing House, 2023, p. 5). Ecaterina Niculcea’s doctoral dissertation, “Фантастическое начало в произведениях Э. Т. А. Гофмана, Н. В. Гоголя, М. А. Булгакова” / “The Fantastic Dimension in the Works of E. T. A. Hoffmann, N. Gogol, and M. Bulgakov” (specialization 622.02 – World and Comparative Literature; scientific advisor: Prof. Dr. Habil. Elena Prus), starts from broad generalizations that can be framed within the affirmation of a fundamental idea: “the fantastic and realism are enduring tendencies of literature, present even within the same work” (Florica Bodiștean).
