Summary/Abstract: This article revisits the concept of liberal nationalism as developed in the relevant contemporary political philosophy and theory literature. The discussion draws on the pluralist tradition of Isaiah Berlin and the normative reconstructions proposed by Yael Tamir, articulating liberal nationalism as both a response to the crisis of governance and as an instrument for institutional coherence in fragmented societies engaged in major historical transformations. The article highlights the role of collective identity as an indispensable infrastructure for sustaining liberal democracy. It also explores the functions of liberal nationalism – symbolic, institutional, normative, and systemic – within a polycentric governance model, inspired by the work of Elinor and Vincent Ostrom. By adopting a governance-centred, polycentric perspective, it frames liberal nationalism not as an ideological endpoint but as a major component of the functional mechanisms within the architecture of democratic governance, essential for maintaining institutional coherence, legitimacy, symbolic anchoring, and the checks and balances processes in the fragmented and changing societies and governance systems of the 21st century.
