Summary/Abstract: “Why is it that we, Romanians—ethnically more homogeneous than the Germans—had to wait a thousand years for our destiny? An unfavorable geographical position, adverse historical conditions, barbarian invasions, savage neighbors? Yet these should have been additional reasons for affirmation, elements of our own greatness, if the impulse to make history—the blind and primordial impulse—had irresistibly thrown us into the universal whirlwind. What have we reached today? The will to make history. Whoever has understood this is fully aware of the tragedy of small cultures, of everything that is rational, abstract, and conscious in our own tragic condition.”
