Summary/Abstract: “Why have we Romanians—who, as a people, are more homogeneous than the Germans—had to wait a thousand years for our destiny? The unfavorable geographical position, the adversity of historical conditions, the barbarian invasions, the dangerous neighbors? Yet all of this should have been reasons for our own assertion and strengthening, if the drive toward history—the blind and primordial drive—had irresistibly thrust us into the midst of the universal whirlwind. But where have we arrived now? At the will to make history. Whoever has understood this is enlightened about the tragedy of small cultures and about everything that is rational, abstract, and conscious within our own tragic condition.”
