ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF STATE SECURITY

Summary/Abstract: On April 10, 1925, the National Assembly of Bulgaria adopted the Law on Administration and Police, which established the Police Directorate under the Ministry of Interior and Public Health. The first department of the Directorate became the State Security. The law was approved on May 5, 1925, which is also the birth date of this national institution. What can we learn from the history of State Security and the public's memory of it during this century of its existence in the Third Bulgarian State? In recent years, many books and monographs have been written on this issue; it is the subject of increased attention by the media, a number of films have been made on this topic, and it is constantly commented on on social networks. Perhaps there is no other institution and activity in Bulgaria that has been subjected to such public attention, reaching both extremes - an extremely positive and an extremely negative attitude.I have previously written several books related to the history of the Bulgarian State Security, and in May 2025, together with Professor Dr. Stefan Simeonov, published "History of the Bulgarian Police and Special Services" in the Trud Publishing House. Now I am trying to present this history of State Security in a new, previously unused way, by relating each section with a separate topic or occasion.I have strived to be objective in presenting the activities of State Security from 1925 to 1989, and thereafter, as we know it from history, and I hope that readers will accept my view of the nearly 101-year history of State Security. To the readers of the magazine "Political Horizons", I offer three of the sections of the book, which I believe best reflect the specifics of the activities of State Security.
