Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the inheritance case of a Sarajevo tanner (tabak) from the early 19th century, whose death led to the initiation of legal proceedings, during which it was established that he had left debts and that further consideration was needed regarding the distribution of the remaining estate. The person in question was named Đipa Mustafa-baša, son of Ibrahim, from Sarajevo, and was recorded as a resident of Vekil-harč Mahala. Based on Sharia court records, the entire probate process was presented, during which the court was petitioned by creditors for the recovery of unpaid debts from the estate of the deceased. Special attention is given to a detailed analysis of the inventory of the estate, including movable and immovable property, the amount and structure of the debts, court expenses, and the process of satisfying the creditors from the available assets. This case illustrates the complexity of the relationship between private property, family rights, and obligations toward third parties within the Ottoman legal system and offers insight into the economic position and everyday challenges faced by Sarajevo artisans in the first half of the 19th century.
