Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the contract between the Kreševo Franciscan Monastery and the monastery’s serf Bonaventura (Bona) Kmetović, concluded in 1781. Given that serfdom did not exist as such in the Orient, including the Ottoman Empire, and that the relationships between landlords (beys and aghas, or in this case the Monastery) and serfs were, without exception, regulated by oral agreements, contracts of this kind are rare, if indeed any other has even been preserved. This one is particularly notable because the mentioned monastic serf was not only a farmer but also a construction craftsman. The contract outlines the rights and obligations of the contracting parties in eight articles, with a part omitted as it was implied under the customary law of the time.
