Summary/Abstract: The arrival of the Ottoman Empire in Bosnia brought a series of processes that unfolded in this region. One of these was the establishment of a network of military fortifications that represented a fusion of the local and the newly introduced Ottoman system, in which existing resources were extensively utilized. Wherever possible, these fortifications were adapted to new infrastructural and organizational needs, with necessary adjustments implemented in both areas. This paper traces the gradual incorporation of Herzegovinian fortresses into the Ottoman military system, their subsequent status, and the development of that system within the Sanjak of Herzegovina. It will also address the question of how many Herzegovinian fortresses were actively used for military purposes, which locations they were, and what their military capacities were from the mid-15th to the late 17th century. This will, in turn, provide an answer to how the “frontier” military zone in Herzegovina was formed within this time-frame, as well as insights into the transformations caused by internal and external factors, and the ways in which external influences were reflected in the military reorganization of the region.
