Some Problems of Field Processing and Conservation of Stećak Tombstones on the Example of Necropolises in the Visoko Area

Summary/Abstract: Since 2016, the process of inventorying stećak tombstones has been carried out in the wider area of Visoko as part of the project Location, recording and reconnaissance of stećak tombstones in the area of the City of Visoko with an assessment of the state of preservation / damage. To date, a total of five phases have been implemented (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023-2024), in which 32 necropolises with a total of 424 recorded stećak tombstones have been processed. The basis of the project activities is the field processing of stećak tombstones, which includes cleaning the stećak tombstones/necropolises as a form of preliminary conservation and completing the accompanying technical documentation. The result of the project is a record of the numerical status and typological analysis of stećak tombstones, which is then introduced into the public academic discourse through official reports and then in the form of professional articles. Behind this reporting, however, there is often a whole series of problems and challenges that stand in the way of achieving the final goal, some of which greatly affect the results of the investigative process. The task of this paper is therefore to attempt to present in one place the basic problems of field processing of stećak tombstones, based on the experience gained from the implementation of the stećak tombstone census project in the area of the City of Visoko in the period 2016 - 2024.
