Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the impact of the digital environment on the standard of the Romanian literary language, exploring the complex transformations generated by the rapid expansion of online communication. It highlights not only the observable tendencies toward graphic simplification, abbreviation, and the informalization of expression, but also the dynamic processes of adaptation, lexical enrichment, and structural innovation that accompany digital interaction. Particular attention is given to the relationship between usage and norm, especially in a context where written communication has become more immediate, interactive, and widely accessible than ever before. The paper examines how frequent digital practices—such as the adoption of anglicisms, the emergence of hybrid written–oral forms, and the incorporation of paralinguistic elements—challenge, reshape, or coexist with established literary standards. Furthermore, the study discusses the role of linguistic regulatory institutions, such as the Academia Română, in codifying, preserving, and periodically updating the norms of the literary language. It argues that while these institutions continue to provide essential frameworks of standardization and cultural cohesion, normative authority increasingly operates in dialogue with actual language use. In this sense, the evolution of the literary norm is presented as a dynamic process shaped by the interaction between institutional regulation and the communicative realities of the digital age.
