Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the contribution of Professor Dževad Jahić to the history of the Bosnian literary language, particularly his article “On the Vernacular and Literary Language of Bosnian Muslims”, published in 1990 in the Sarajevo journal Pregled, in which, for the first time, the history of the Bosnian literary language was systematically described in one paper. Jahić’s understanding of the history of the literary language was dynamic and always grounded in linguistic material—that is, linguistic regularities were consistently derived from the rich literary and linguistic tradition of the Bosniaks, that he viewed within the broader South Slavic context. Over time, Jahić further developed and refined the core ideas from this text, attempting to supplement and temporally define them, which ultimately led to the creation of the only existing periodization of the history of the Bosnian literary language. For all these reasons, this article deserves a more thorough study, as it contributes to a clearer understanding of the development of the literary-linguistic tradition in the Bosnian language.
