Summary/Abstract: The mission and objective of military operations is to deprive enemy forces of their ability to operate and to prevent them from capturing or holding specific territory. The essence of military operations is combat, which should be characterised by purposefulness, activity, economy of forces, manoeuvrability, surprise and combat capability. The Polish Armed Forces consist of five basic types of troops. One of them is the Territorial Defence Forces, tasked in recent years with protecting the Polish border, which is also the border of the European Union and an area of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's activity. This paper raises questions about the state of theory and practice in the area of the functioning of these forces in the state border security system and the type and nature of tactical operations, so that they are optimal. It discusses the current land border protection system. The author assumes that the existing doctrine, generally applicable legal norms and practice provide sufficient grounds for concluding that the Territorial Defence Forces are intended to perform tasks related to border protection and defence. Combat operations should be based on the defence doctrine and operational system of the Armed Forces, as well as tactics. The main determinant of all of these is the specific nature of the area of operation, i.e. the proximity of the border and the potential adversary, as well as the criterion of its activity.
