Summary/Abstract: In a world dominated by technological progress and economic competition, the notion of compassion sometimes seems like a fragile ideal. And yet, it represents one of the oldest and most profound moral laws of humanity. From the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who stated that the greatness of a nation is measured by how it treats its animals, to the reflections of physician and philosopher Albert Schweitzer on “reverence for life,” compassion has been regarded as the foundation of a just society. Today, this idea takes on a new dimension: compassion not only as a personal virtue, but as a law that protects the rights of living beings.
