Summary/Abstract: Designing a good textbook for teaching Romanian as a Foreign Language (RFL) in the biomedical field represents a complex pedagogical challenge, shaped by learner diversity academic objectives, and the need to integrate language learning with disciplinary knowledge. Grounded in ESP/LSP theory, this paper examines the criteria that define an effective RFL textbook for foreign students preparing for medical studies, arguing that quality lies not in linguistic exhaustiveness but in relevance, selectivity, and pedagogical coherence. The study highlights the central role of needs analysis, discourse awareness, and learner‑centred design, with particular emphasis on the functional integration of thematically relevant content, and controlled specialised biomedical lexis. As sociocultural and pragmatic competences are also considered essential for successful academic and pre‑professional integration, the paper illustrates these principles through sample exercises, in its attempt to demonstrate the role of the textbook as a flexible and dynamic pedagogical tool. Finally, the study outlines the importance of tailoring RFL biomedical materials, with a view on the best Preparatory Year outcomes.
