Summary/Abstract: European linguists of the 2000s are interested in the language of football in various aspects, but football neologisms as representatives of the linguistic worldview of the fan community are rarely the object of research. This article analyzes the main works related to the linguistics of football and describes scholarly studies on football neologisms in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, partially Polish, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. Scholarly works demonstrate the neologization of Portuguese and Spanish, which is primarily due to extralinguistic factors, such as the strong development of football in Portuguese-speaking and Spanish-speaking countries, its anthropocentric nature and the heroization of players and coaches. The study of neologisms in Italian and Hungarian is more connected to the discourse of fans and Internet communication, although linguists actively analyze the structural peculiarities of innovations. The popularity of football as a sport allows scholars to use different sources to select material, and major football tournaments such as the World Cups or the European Championships encourage speakers to create new words and researchers to analyze them.
