International Criminal Police Organization Interpol in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022

Summary/Abstract: Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is an event that forced many entities, including the International CriminalPolice Organization Interpol, to take a position on this matter. The article covers Interpol’s reaction to Russia’s attack on Ukraineand the projects undertaken by this organisation in the context of the armed conflict that resulted from it. The dynamicallychanging situation related to the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict necessitated the adoption of certain time frames for thestudy. Accordingly, the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was selected as the starting point of the analysis, withthe end of November 2024 designated as its concluding date. The analysis carried out made it possible to compare the principlesof functioning and competences of Interpol, resulting from the legal bases regulating its activities, with the actual activityin relation to events connected to the armed conflict in question, and its potential consequences from the point of view of ensuringsecurity. The conclusions drew attention to the appropriate attitude of this organisation in the face of emerging demands fromsome countries regarding the exclusion of Russia from Interpol, and simultaneously steps taken by the Organisation to limit thepossibility of using diffusions for purposes not related to combating crime were assessed positively. Practical projects implementedby Interpol in connection with the ongoing armed conflict and the related crime threats were also analysed and assessed.
