Summary/Abstract: In this paper, delivered under the auspices of the Visegrád Fund-supported project “My Hero, Your Enemy”, I aim to explore the complex and evolving relationship between North Macedonia and its neighbors, Bulgaria and Greece, focusing on the historical, political, and social dynamics that have shaped these interactions. I will demonstrate how disputes over language, history, and identity have been both barriers and catalysts in North Macedonia’s journey toward Euro-Atlantic integration. By examining key developments, such as Bulgaria’s recognition of Macedonian independence in 1992, the Skopje 2014 project, and the political unrest of the early 2010s, I will provide a comprehensive backdrop to the more recent eorts at rapprochement and their consequences.
