On the Translation of The Mountain Wreath and The Ray of the Microcosm into Japanese

Summary/Abstract: The successful translation of Njegoš’s The Mountain Wreath and The Lay of the Microcosm into Japanese is a fruit of the joint effort of two translators and the happy combination of their different experiences, approaches and inclinations. They based their work on three principles: 1) to translate a fixed form of verse as a fixed form in Japanese, in this case, Serbian non-symmetric deca-syllable verse into a Japanese verse of fourteen syllables (7/7); 2) to translate “line for line”; 3) to translate Njegoš’s poetic language into Japanese used contemporaneously, that is in the 19th century. For better understanding of the verses, translators wrote notes as an appendix to Japanese editions: 661 for The Mountain Wreath and 291 for The Lay of the Microcosmos. The notes explain the meanings of words and expressions, persons mentioned in the verses, historical events as a background, local customs, and the different interpretations by researchers.
