Summary/Abstract: The article explores the artistic representation of the historical events of the Second World War and the first postwar years through the individual memory and traumatic experience of the heroines in the novels Sonka [Sońka ] by the Polish writer Ignacy Karpowicz and Sweet Darusia [Solodka Darusja ] by the Ukrainian writer Maria Matios. Rejecting the post-totalitarian narrative, both authors discuss the problem of the victims’ silence, the attitude of society to “the others”, the role of storytelling and communication in overcoming the consequences of psychological trauma and the possibility of establishing relations with society. A comparative analysis of the authors’ reflections of the specific understanding and sense of historical realities by borderland residents in the context of the alternative history is conducted.
