Summary/Abstract: This article explores the theoretical, historical, and applied dimensions of the concept of “ability” within the context of special pedagogy and psychology. Drawing on academic discussions developed in the works of Henri Piéron – 1960, Ouvrier-Bonnaz – 2019, Reuchlin – 2001, as well as key contributions from Bulgarian psycho-pedagogical literature – Piryov & Desev – 1981; Garbacheva – 2015, 2018, the study traces the evolution of the concept of ability, its interaction with environmental factors, and its relevance to the assessment and support of children and students with special educational needs. The article proposes a model for studying individual abilities, grounded in a functional analysis of environmental factors – social, physical, and participation – and their relationship to educational needs. The model is supported by empirical data, obtained through semi-structured interviews with 58 educational specialists and analysis of real-world individualized educational programs
