Summary/Abstract: This research investigates the influence of both individual variables related to the project manager and the project contextual variables on the choice of project management (PM) tools and techniques used in information systems (IS) projects. Responses to an international web-based survey showed that individual variables, such as the project manager’s specialized training and years of experience in PM, as well as variables such as the adopted PM methodology or use of software in PM, play a central role in the use of the various PM tools and techniques in IS projects. The results of this research help organizations improve PM performance, namely by choosing skilled and experienced project managers for their projects and defining focused training programs.
