Summary/Abstract: This article represents a case study of the justification for the veto exercised by the President of the Republic of Poland, who – on the basis of Article 122(5) of the Polish Constitution – refused to sign the Bill of 26 April 2024 adopted by the Polish Parliament to amend the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Languages as well as certain other acts. The focus of this case study is not on the legal construct of the presidential power to veto legislation but on the Polish President’s arguments pertaining to the legal status of regional languages and the possibility of assigning such a status to Silesian, in addition to the Kashubian language. In particular, what has been analysed is the main thesis of the President’s justification for his veto, namely that he based his arguments on substantive reasons, and not on political ones. The article adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining a dogmatic legal analysis with a review of theories from the fields of social sciences and humanities.
