Summary/Abstract: Poland is inhabited by a considerable number of people belonging to national and ethnic minorities. According to the 2021 census, the number of such persons approximates to one million, although this figure may be an underestimate. The legal status of national and ethnic minorities is regulated by the following: the Constitution of the Republic of Poland; acts of universal and regional international law; as well as domestic legal acts, and in particular the parliamentary act entitled ‘the Act of 6 January 2005 on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Languages’. The said acts also impose certain obligations on the state as regards the state’s policies towards those minorities. A special role in the state’s dialogue with minorities is played by the Joint Commission of the Government and National and Ethnic Minorities, which is a consultative and advisory body for the Prime Minister. This analysis presents the course of the legislative work on the aforementioned Act and, above all, the origins of the establishment of the said Joint Commission as well as its organisational structure, functioning, and activity.
