Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze selected, most important issues concerning the organization and operation of the secondary education system in Galicia throughout the partition period. The information base is comprised of selected studies on this topic. The article presents the conditions for the operation of secondary education and the dynamics of the school network's development. Furthermore, the organizational structure of the schools is discussed. Next, the student population is characterized in terms of their number, national origin, and social background. The article points out that for almost a century, the Austrian authorities were reluctant to establish secondary schools in Galicia. This process accelerated only at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. These schools enjoyed considerable popularity among young people, which led to overcrowding and numerous space problems. Among the students were representatives of various nations living in Galicia. During the period in question, schools changed their organizational structure, educational profile and teaching programs.
