Summary/Abstract: The article touches upon a comparative analysis of commonly used phraseological units with the bilyi – chornyi (white – black) components in the Ukrainian and Slovak languages from the point of view of their effective use in the study of both languages by foreigners. The lexical group of colour names, together with other frequently used adjectives, belongs to the basic vocabulary and is studied already at the initial levels of language learning, and the colour names themselves in phraseology are often the carriers of the national and cultural components of the language, convey the mentality of the people, reproduce fragments of the picture of the world specific to a certain linguistic and cultural community. The difficulty of perceiving and interpreting phraseological units for speakers of another linguistic culture lies in the fact that the lexical background of such units may not coincide at all or partially coincide with the corresponding units of another language. A comparative analysis of Ukrainian and Slovak colour names reveals a significant layer of phraseological units equivalent in meaning and form, at the same time we discovered and described a number of specific, non-equivalent phraseological units in both languages as well as cross-linguistic homonyms.
