Summary/Abstract: The activity of György Arnold (Đuro Arnold), choirmaster and organist in Subotica, has generally been interpreted in the local music-historical literature primarily in terms of his achievements as a performer and composer. In contrast, the present study places the pedagogical and educational dimension of his work in the foreground. It examines how Arnold organized the regular training of boy singers within the framework of the parish, what curricular and methodological elements his instruction was based on, and how this contributed to the sustainable functioning of Subotica’s church music culture in the early nineteenth century. The source of the analysis consists of archival documents preserved in the Subotica Historical Archives relating to Arnold’s official and pedagogical activities, as well as two manuscript documents intended specifically for educational purposes – the “Compendium musicae ecclesiasticae” (1819) and the “Specifikatio Cantus Musici” (1832). Accord- ing to the evidence of these sources, Arnold not only fulfilled church musical duties but also established an institutional and progressive training structure that ensured the long-term provision of higher-level musical support for the liturgical practice and indirectly enabled the performance of works requiring a larger musical ensemble, such as the “Missa Sparta” (1848).
