Summary/Abstract: The author examines the reception of Njegoš’s work in the Matica Srpska Letopis (Chronicle) in the period from 1831 to 1852, with special attention to the texts of Teodor Pavlović and Jovan Subotić. Regarding Njegoš‘s first original work Pustinjak cetinjski (The Hermit of Cetinje) Pavlović clearly emphasized in 1834 Serbian national consciousness and romantic basis of Njegoš‘s poetics, which marked the beginning of a serious literary critical evaluation of his work. Then in 1837 and 1838, when Pavlović was an editor, Njegoš published his texts in Letopis, but did not continue with it afterwards. However, in that later period bibliographic notes about Njegoš‘s books were published in Letopis. In 1845, Njegoš became a member of the Matica Srpska paying the fee of 100 forints, and in 1847 he sent one copy of Luča mikrokozma (The Ray of the Microcosm) and 5 copies of Gorski vijenac (The Mountain Wreath) to the Matica Srpska Library. A sermon com¬memorative of the death of Njegoš given by the then editor Jovan Subotić in Vienna was published in Letopis in 1852. In this text was given for the first time a completed assess¬ment of Njegoš as a ruler, bishop and poet, and thus the bases were set for the development of Njegoš‘s cult in Serbian literature and culture, as well as the cult of Montenegro as Serbian Sparta. The contribution of the Matica Srpska Letopis and its contributors Teodor Pavlović and Jovan Subotić in the process of establishing the value system and related Serbian cultural memory is of greatest importance.
