Summary/Abstract: The article examines early novels by Edith Templeton and her outlook on the First Czechoslovak Re public. It argues that Templeton is skeptical of claims of Czech exceptionalism; rather, she depicts the country as deeply provincial. Without the Hapsburg Empire and its nobility, the country, in her view, lost any relevance and direction. In this, she is rather unique in the context of Czech anglo phone literature, which is very often strongly inspired by the portrait of Prague provided by Angelo Maria Ripellino.
