Summary/Abstract: Sarajevo’s suffering and celebrity city standing, marked by atrocities and crimes, obscured warfare in the rest of Bosnia and Hercegovina and analysis of the operational environment around the city itself. The Siege of Sarajevo was not a discrete element in the war in Bosnia and Hercegovina, as it is mostly seen to be. The siege has not been considered in relation to the war as a whole. However, if the siege is situated in the context of warfare in Bosnia and Hercegovina, as a whole, three key connections between the siege and the strategic and operational aspects of the war are evident: at the level of aims and objectives; as a factor in the strategicoperational limitations on the VRS; and as a trigger for the eventual outcome of the armed conflict overall and the siege itself. New research is needed to explore these linkages.
