Summary/Abstract: In Njegoš’s work, entirely written in Serbian language, Serbian language as such is mentioned only once in the almanac “Danica” from 1833. Within his patriotic ideas of South Slavic unity, Njegoš suggests, not only in his literary texts, the unifying national identity role of Serbian language. Njegoš completely supports the romantic ideas of Vuk Stef. Karadžić that language is the basic criteria of the national identity, while the aspect of religion should not be taken as a criterion of national differentiation of the Serbs. This paper shows how and when Njegoš applied Vuk’s idea of the Serbs as religiously fragmented, but liguistically indivisible nation. It also shows what was Njegoš’s attitude towards the „colourfulness“ of idiom and articulation of Štokavian as the only Serbian and Serbian only dialect.
