Summary/Abstract: The author defines the scope of meaning of the term poetic statement (a circle of statements that an author gave in his writings on the nature of his own poetics). The value and meaning of these statements are assessed in relation to the form in which they are involved or the person who tells them (poem, play, letter), and also according to the poetic stages the poet passed through (from folk songs to classicism and romanticism) and a more general concept of poetry as a link between the heavenly (divine) and the earthly (human). Njegoš’s autopoetics by some elements fits into previous Serbian poetic tradition (P. Solarić, L. Mušicki, folk song), and by other elements emerges from it as a new degree of that tradition. Njegoš’s work is in the process of leaving the classicistic poetic devices and gradually adopting the romantic-folk circle.
