Summary/Abstract: The poetry of Petar Petrović Njegoš is analyzed from the perspective of culture and theology. Njegoš was a poet of classical (ecclesiastical and patriarchal-Christian) culture; his poetry appears as a major cultural synthesis of classical cultural forms and as a vertical spirituality of Serbian history and national existence. Observed from a theological perspective, Njegoš’s poetry is presented as a new and original expression of the maturity of Serbian ecclesiastical culture. Although he is open to various theological, philosophical and poetic systems, Njegoš is neither an eclectic poet, nor a poet of original spiritual visions, but a superb Orthodox author who follows and (re)canonizes spirituality of ecclesiastical culture and promotes Orthodox cosmology and anthropology in modern times. Both in poetry and in life Njegoš strongly believed in Christian cosmology, in Christian teaching about creation of the world, in Christian views of human nature, in Christian understanding of personal dignity and the meaning of humane existence. He does not belong to Serbian modern culture but Serbian ecclesiastical and patriarchal-Christian culture. In modern times, Njegoš is a poet of original religious inspiration, a poet of the Orthodox Christian faith, and a poet of Serbian authentic ecclesiastical culture. He is brilliant because he is deeply religious, and not just pious, as it was shown by young Nikolaj Velimirović.
