Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the anthropology and Christology of St. John of Damascus as the dogmatic foundation of Orthodox iconography and sacred art. It shows that the legitimacy of the icon and of sacred art as a whole does not rest on aesthetic or cultural conventions, but on the mystery of the Incarnation, through which the invisible God became visible in Christ. The study emphasizes that, for Damascene thought, the human being is created in the image of God, while Christ, the perfect icon of the Father, reveals both the dignity and the destiny of humanity. Sacred art thus becomes a visual theology, with catechetical and apologetic roles, transmitting the faith of the Church and making accessible the eschatological beauty of deification. By linking the patristic heritage with contemporary challenges, the article highlights the relevance of the icon and of sacred art as confessional and missionary expressions of Orthodoxy.
