Summary/Abstract: Patriarch Miron Cristea, born into a peasant family in Toplița, maintained his respect for popular culture throughout his life. His education in Bistrița and Năsăud awakened his interest in folklore, leading him to publish studies and become involved in Transylvanian cultural activities and the struggle for the rights of Romanians in Transylvania. After the Great Union, as the first patriarch of Romania, he wanted the Church to integrate authentic elements of Romanian tradition. That is why he chose as the emblem of the Patriarchate a folk cross, inspired by a cross on an old wooden church in the village of his childhood. This symbol culturally unites several Romanian provinces and expresses the continuity between folk tradition and national identity.
