STORYTELLING AS A METHOD IN THE TEACHING OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS STUDY

Summary/Abstract: Storytelling is analyzed through interdisciplinary approach – from an aspect of Islamic pedagogy, didactics, hadith hermeneutics and communicology. The paper shows that, together with Quran stories, the Prophet, peace be upon him, uses narration as a tool not only for transfer of information, but also for shaping attitudes, identities and behaviors, whereby basing his narration on empathy, identification with the main character in the story, emotional engagement and moral lesson. In the context of didactics, storytelling is adapted to different profiles of listeners – children, adults, individuals and masses – and involves examples from previous nations, personal testimonials and historical events. As a very strong argument for its use in educational process is the fact that it does not require significant preparation, and in addition, it also does not require any financial means nor any special technical prerequisite. The analysis shows that this method enables not only knowledge transfer, but also shaping of internal attitudes that remain eternally engraved in memories and hearts of listeners. Strengthening of this method once again in temporary religious education, as well as in wider educational frame, could significantly contribute to development of emotional intelligence, ethical maturity and spiritual consciousness in children, young people and adults. This paper contributes to temporary Islamic pedagogy in a sense that it sheds light on a slightly neglected but very powerful tool of educational practice and offers bases for its reuse in actual contexts of formal and informal education, and in religious education in the first place.
