Summary/Abstract: This article offers an exploration of the development of opera from the mid-1970s to the present, including operas that utilized contemporary technology. The author posits that this period, measured by the success of such musical masterpieces as Philip Glass's trilogy of portrait operas or John Adams's opera Nixon in China, can be described as an opera renaissance at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Many of the works composed in the last fifty years have entered the repertoires of leading opera houses, surprising contemporary audiences with new, original musical and visual concepts, exploring new content, and challenging traditional approaches to the genre.
