Humans need dialogue: Some reflections by an ethnomusicologist

Summary/Abstract: Contemporary ethnomusicologists emphasize that ethnographic practices should be dialectical in nature and based on cooperation between the researcher and the researched. The traditional power dynamics between them is replaced by dialogue, an interactive process in which both sides participate. A useful tool in research can be Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of polyphony and dialogism, adapted by representatives of various branches of the humanities and social sciences, and since the 1990s also by musicologists. After outlining the main assumptions of this theory, related to such concepts as "polyphony," "dialogue," "heteroglossia," "chronotope," and "carnivalization," possible inspirations for research on musical phenomena are discussed. Using these concepts, the author attempts to describe the musical culture of Polish diaspora groups living in a multi-ethnic environment in Brazil, where she conducted field research with students from the University of Wrocław and Adam Mickiewicz University.
